Together with East Flanders, the province of West Flanders forms the historic county of Flanders. The area has many salt marshes and silt, which explains why the Latin name Flandrensis, which refers to this, is mentioned as the origin of the name. West Flanders is located on the west coast of Belgium and is therefore a popular tourist area.
