The province, which has had a hard time a number of times, is also the most water-rich and in most cases the most sunny in our country. Zeeland has a variety of islands and peninsulas, such as Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, which is adjacent to Belgium, with the Zwin and the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe as the most important nature reserves. On Walcheren, which is partly located on the North Sea and on the Western Scheldt, we find the capital Middelburg and Domburg, the oldest seaside resort on the coast. With the Oosterscheldekering and the Watersnoodmuseum, Schouwen-Duiveland is inextricably linked to the sea. Noord-Beveland has been conquered by man from the sea. The beach at Neeltje Jans offers a spectacular view over the Delta Works. Tholen and Sint Philipsland are islands surrounded by the Krammer, the Krabbenkreek and the Oosterschelde. Finally, Zuid-Beveland, which is a peninsula in the middle of Zeeland, between the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde. Here we find one of the most beautiful polder landscapes in the Netherlands: the Zak van Zuid-Beveland.
Characteristic farm houses
Like many villages, Gapinge also consists of farms that had their business on a long lease. The village was once owned by the van Borsselen family and remained for a long time with noble families. Characteristic are the farmhouses with green and white shutters and the black and white barn doors.
Stellingmill De Graanhalm
The round windmill De Graanhalm (1896) can be visited every Saturday (when the blades are rotating). Until 1962, this mill, built with 120,000 bricks, milled commercially and until 1998 it was still running. In 2015 the mill was restored and reopened festively.
There is only one place in Europe that had a strong economic link with Scotland: Veere. This city has grown due to the wool trade, which can still be seen in the beautiful Scottish houses on the harbor. Today it is a popular tourist resort.
Immense village church
Brouw ', as Brouwershaven is also called, is a quiet harbor town with a large and special church. Due to its location on the Grevelingenmeer, the place is popular with water sports enthusiasts.
Originated around the abbey
The capital of Zeeland is one of the most beautiful monument cities in the Netherlands. Middelburg therefore has many beautiful buildings. The city originated around the abbey, which is the central point of the city. The rich history can still be seen in the current street scene.
Pearl on the Oosterschelde
A certain Zierik once lived on the Ee and that river became Zierik's Ee and eventually Zierikzee was created. This monumental city has more than 500 monuments and likes to call itself "the Pearl on the Oosterschelde".
Zonnemaire and Zierikzee
With the help of the 'Fietsknoopapp' we cycle a round on Schouwen-Duiveland to Zierikzee. On the way we take some time to visit the town of Zonnemaire.
Around Western Walcheren
We cycle a round on Walcheren from Gapinge over Domburg. On the way we pass Serooskerke, Oostkapelle, Grijpskerke and Sint Laurens, each a village with a fun fact.
We cycle using the bicycle button app from Gapinge through northwest Walcheren to visit Veere. We complete the tour via the dike village of Vrouwenpolder, which owes its name to a mysterious painting by Maria, and via Serooskerke, where a thousand gold coins were found in 1966.
