Bourgondië - Franche-Comté
Living as a Burgundian is often used to indicate the good life. And we indeed find that in this region. In the northern regions of Burgundy and Franche-Comté we mainly find rolling hills with fields. The heart of Burgundy is the Morvan, a dense area. The capital of the region is Dijon.
The city of Autun has a history that starts in Roman times. There are even remnants from that time. Autun Cathedral has a beautiful tympanum over the Last Judgment.
Ship tunnel and Vauban
Besançon is one of the cities transformed into a fortress by master builder Vauban. The citadel towers high above the city and is illuminated at night. The city lies in a meander of the Doubs. A tunnel for boats and bicycles under the citadel is an attraction.
River port city
Châlons-sur-Saône was once a busy river port from which much locally grown wine was shipped. Now the cruise ships dock to visit the beautiful city center.
Old town with castle
In the town of Saint-Fargeau is a castle dating from 980 and used to house a number of well-known French people. When it fell into disrepair, Michel Guyot bought the castle for an apple and an egg and put a lot of time and money into the restoration. Spectacular performances are held every year, complete with horse riders. More about this castle can be found on the internet.
