The Land Sachsen-Anhalt lies between Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia. This state was created at the end of World War II when the occupying power of Russia merged the former Prussian Saxons with the country of Anhalt. After years of division and reunification, the state was finally established after the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. The most famous tourist area is the Harz.
In the Harz is the Brocken, a mountain with an interesting history during the Cold War. A narrow gauge railway leads to the top, on which the Harzer Schmallspur Bahn maintains a timetable with steam trains.
The historic center, as well as the castle and St. Servaaskerk, situated on a hill, are on the World Heritage List. Quedlinburg is a beautiful city with beautiful examples of half-timbered architecture.
